Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is CLUE?
A: CLUE stands for Creative Learning in a Unique Environment. It is a program designed to provide academically talented and intellectually gifted students an opportunity to study topics of interest and to deepen their thinking through differentiated teaching and challenging learning activities. In the elementary grades, CLUE is a pull out program that meets twice a week, five hours per week. In grades 6 through 9, CLUE meets every day and takes the place of the regular education Reading and Language Arts class.
Q: How can my child qualify for CLUE?
A: Beginning in the 2019-2020 school year, all SCS students in grades K-8 will be universally screened for CLUE. Students who score in the 90th to 99th percentile on the district's RTI benchmark assessment in the fall or in the winter will automatically be referred for CLUE testing. Students in grades K-2 with qualifying scores on the CLUE eligibility assessment will be placed in the primary CLUE enrichment program. Students in grades 3-8 with qualifying scores will be referred for a comprehensive evaluation with a school psychologist to determine eligibility for intermediate Gifted CLUE.
Q: If my child qualifies for CLUE, will he/she have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)?
A: Students who meet the state's eligibility criteria for intermediate Gifted CLUE will receive an IEP. Students who qualify for primary CLUE enrichment based on the district's CLUE eligibility assessment can attend CLUE without an IEP.
Q: My child was tested, but did not qualify for CLUE. Can he/she be retested?
A: In grades 1 and 2, students who continue to score in the 90th percentile or above on the district's benchmark assessments can be retested once per semester. If your child was tested by a school psychologist and did not qualify for CLUE based on the state's eligibility standards, you can have your child retested privately by an independent psychologist at your own expense.
